Mining companies looking for more copper, nickel, gold and other metals in Northeastern Minnesota will get a chance to prospect on more land after action this morning by the state’s Executive Council in St. Paul.
A group of Lake County residents today asked the Minnesota Supreme Court to consider their case asking the state to conduct environmental reviews before state mineral rights are leased to mining companies.
Search crews gathered at McQuade Small Craft Harbor northeast of Duluth on Sunday evening after nearby residents reported a possible boat crash out on Lake Superior, but officials found nothing in more than three hours out on the water.
Dense fog across much of the Northland this morning may give way to strong, possibly severe thunderstorms across the region this afternoon. In the wake of the storms, light snow is possible on Thursday.
State agencies, local and tribal governments, and some private nonprofit
organizations in Minnesota have until Sunday to apply for federal public assistance to help recover from June’s severe storms and flooding.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for much of the Northland, including Duluth and the Iron Range, through Thursday evening as a slow-moving storm system may drop in excess of 4 inches of rain in some areas.
