Daniel Alvarez, the 31-year-old Florida man who passed through Lake County last summer on his 4,000- mile kayak adventure from the Northwest Angle in northern Minnesota to the Florida Keys, has been making steady progress down the Mississippi River.
In a Kayak Festival t-shirt and flip-flops, 31-year-old Daniel Alvarez looked like he could have been one of the many who took part in the paddling and fun in Two Harbors a couple weeks ago. But Alvarez is not from these parts.
An afternoon paddle on Lake Superior is always a nice way to end a busy day. In Vicki Holisky’s view, kayaking with a group is much more fun and safer. That’s why she took action when asked at the 2010 Two Harbors Kayak Festival about starting a beginner’s kayak group.
An empty kayak. An abandoned car. A life jacket. A paddle. Piece by piece last week, a disturbing reality emerged along the shore of Lake Superior around Split Rock Creek. Grimly, all that can be expected now is to find a body.
