The Lake County Board of Commissioners is considering a request from the White Iron Chain of Lakes Association (WICOLA) in Ely to help pay for traps to slow the spread of rusty crayfish, an invasive species.
Crews pumped a biocide into two of 10 ballast tanks in the Indiana Harbor as it left Gary, Ind., treating 1.8 million gallons of ballast water. The chemical then was neutralized with a second chemical as the boat moved across Lake Superior before releasing ballast in the Duluth-Superior harbor.
While most eyes have been on the Great Lakes as the likely route for an Asian carp invasion into the Northland, the creatures already may be making a back-door move into the region up the St. Croix and Mississippi rivers.
