Two Harbors and Silver Bay volunteer firefighters responded to a garage fire at 627 Eighth Avenue in Two Harbors on Saturday. The house, which was undamaged, and the garage are owned by Mark Blankenship.
Dogs lured by the smell of grilled bratwurst and hamburgers meandered in and out of the fire station. Kids donned red plastic fire helmets and filled in fire prevention-themed coloring books. Adults chatted amiably as oldies and country music played.
Forest Service crews working to warn Boundary Waters campers to leave the area made the right decision when they deployed their fire shelters on Insula Lake to avoid last September’s raging Pagami Creek Fire.
Helicopters, airplanes, fire engines, bulldozers and nearly 100 people on the ground are battling the Highway 1 fire just outside of Ely today, trying to keep the blaze in check as strong winds develop again.
UPDATE: City officials rescinded an evacuation order for the southeastern portion of the city at about 6 p.m., allowing residents to return home after a close call for the city with a population of 3,480. No injuries were reported and officials say no occupied homes were lost.
