On Thursday at 12:30 p.m., members of local faith communities gathered on the steps of the Lake County court house in observance of the 62nd annual National Day of Prayer. The event was sponsored by the North Shore Evangelical Fellowship and was one of many similar events taking place all over the country.
A guy walks into a bar and starts a church. For some, that might sound like the set-up for a punch line. But for Chris Fletcher, there’s no joke.

The Rev. Michael Lyons, pastor at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, blesses a basket of handmade wooden crosses held by parishioner Marilyn Schaefer, during Mass on Wednesday. The crosses will be inserted into gift pouches and distributed to the sick and homebound by members of the BeFriender Ministry, an ecumenical lay pastoral care program based at the church. The crosses are made by Larry Groothausen.
A “gorgeous sunrise” paints the members of area churches with the soft colors of celebration on Easter morning. The 40 people and their pastors came from Evangelical Free, First Baptist, Grace Baptist and Living Waters Fellowship, which are part of the North shore Evangelical Fellowship. Included in the celebration was the blowing of the rams horns by pastors Joe Whiting and Jim Joseph.
