The first time Bonnie Powers visited Minnesota, the high was 34 degrees and the low was 7. Still, the native Californian was not deterred from her ultimate goal – to map out a cycling tour of the state for her club, the Valley Spokesman.
In the land of 10,000 lakes, the one thing you can count on seeing in Minnesota is water. And while the vast views of Lake Superior, beach bonfires with s’mores, or a weekend at your favorite lake cabin are great ways to enjoy the area, we propose adding another water-themed activity to your agenda … walking on it.

Take one part shooting into the sun, add two parts lake effect, and the resulting photograph is out of this world. When the weather is misbehaving in any way, that's when the best photo opportunities usually present themselves. This was shot last Sunday, when the temperatures were well below zero. Frigid air, colliding with the warmer waters of Lake Superior, create an almost-eerie mist.
