Howard Everett Anderson
Howard Everett Anderson was born on November 19, 1915, in Batavia, Ill., to Charles and Selma Anderson. He was the third of five boys. Charlie quit his job as a foreman of a plumbing company, and two months later the Great Crash of 1929; he never held another full-time job, and the kids grew up in poverty during the Great Depression. They fished from the then-polluted Fox River for carp, or anything else they could have for dinner.

North Shore Good Neighbors meeting provides fruitful advice
More than 100 people filled the community center last weekend to hear about locally produced foods of all kinds and about producing some of those goods themselves. The group listened to nine presenters relate a sampling of the skills, tools and issues involved in their respective fields and how they came to be growers/fishermen/syrupers/beekeepers. There were exhibits by presenters and other local producers, and even samples of this season’s maple syrup and locally pressed apple cider to be savored.

On Faith
A new gold rush of sorts is pitting Arctic Circle countries against each other. Canada, Russia and the United States are vying for rights over vast untapped reservoirs of natural gas and oil under the arctic sea. Some estimate that 13 percent of the world’s oil reserves and a third of natural gas reserves lie under the ice cap. Because of climate change and new technologies, these once-inaccessible deposits are suddenly becoming a real option.

Letter to the Editor
The April 27 letter from Roger Anderson headlined “Produce metals here OR in third-world country?” should have been titled “Produce metals here AND in third-world country?” Mining promoters have never identified an economic mechanism that will shut down a dirty third-world mine if we destroy our wetlands to open up a sulfide mine in the Superior National Forest.
