Mining companies looking for more copper, nickel, gold and other metals in Northeastern Minnesota will get a chance to prospect on more land after action this morning by the state’s Executive Council in St. Paul.
A group of Lake County residents today asked the Minnesota Supreme Court to consider their case asking the state to conduct environmental reviews before state mineral rights are leased to mining companies.

Already expected to be the largest underground mine in Minnesota history and one of the largest untapped copper-nickel deposits in the world, Twin Metals officials today announced that the deposit of valuable minerals at their proposed mine near Ely and partially in Lake County is even bigger than previously stated.

About 125 employees of Northshore Mining will be laid off Jan. 5 when the taconite operation idles two of its four pelletizing lines, according to an announcement issued Monday by the mine’s owner and operator, Cliffs Natural Resources.
On Friday a contingent that calls itself the Precious Waters Flotilla and includes Lake County residents, will embark on a one-month journey, by canoe, from Aurora to St. Paul along the Partridge and Mississippi rivers.
The three-member Stony River Township board of supervisors voted unanimously for the resolution, which calls for the state of Minnesota to enact a metallic sulfide mining moratorium law, and, until such a moratorium is enacted, to deny all requests for permits to prospect or develop metallic sulfide mines in the township.
