During the fifties in the west of Ireland where I grew up, it was usual for neighbors to drop in for a chat at any time. Over a cup of tea they would exchange gossip and share what was worrying them. In the large cities however, people were not so easy-going. The need for privacy and anonymity made the sharing of hospitality difficult. As those who were raised in small rural communities discovered, when we deny ourselves the company of others in our homes it’s not just the news and refreshments that are lost.

A story is told about a golfer who was about to hit his first tee shot of the day. He swung hard, but completely missed the ball. He swung again and missed again. After a couple more tries, he took out his handkerchief, wiped his brow, and said, “Man, this is a tough course!”

August is the month when we often find unwelcome visitors in our homes. Usually concentrated in the kitchen, ant patrols come indoors in their seemingly perpetual search for food, especially sweets. Being social insects like bees and wasps, ants live in colonies and send out foragers to bring back food to the colony. Ant colonies have divisions of labor, communication systems, and an uncanny ability to solve problems. Such behavior has not gone unnoticed by human cultures.

Imagine the entire population of Two Harbors. Then throw in all the residents of some of our surrounding communities like Knife River and Castle Danger. Imagine us all together, in one place. Men, women, children, young and old ... can you picture this?

First things first! Thank you to all of the firefighters, emergency personnel, law enforcement officers and volunteers who ran to our church in our time of need. Your courage and your dedication to the Finland community leave us deeply humbled and forever thankful. We are blessed to have caring neighbors like you!
