The Minnesota Department of Health is recommending no contact with beach water at 11 beaches along the North Shore after water tests found elevated levels of E. coli bacteria indicating the possible presence of fecal contamination.

Last week the Minnesota Department of Health issued water contact advisories for numerous beaches along the North Shore, including two in Two Harbors. At press time last Wednesday, only Flood Bay remained under advisory, but it was the second time in as many weeks that the alert went out.

An estimated 35,000 gallons of sewage seeped into Skunk Creek and spread to Burlington Bay early last week. The resulting contamination caused the closure of the beach off and on throughout that week and into this week. According to public utilities Gas, Water and Sewer Superintendent, Scott Johnson, the leakage was caused by an electrical failure due to a faulty breaker, resulting in the release of previously contained sewage which harbored bacteria.
