Merlin Kallinen, 79, of Silver Bay, died August 12, 2012, in his home.

He was born on October 12, 1932, to Emil and Lillian Kallinen in Ottertail County, Minn. He grew up in Ottertail County and attended schools at New York Mills. After finishing 7th grade, Merlin worked on the family farm until joining the Air Force. Upon his release from the Air Force, Merlin worked at Reserve Mining as a boiler operator and electrician until his retirement.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, volunteering at church, fly fishing, hunting, camping, snowmobiling, and tinkering with cars.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers; 2 sisters; and a nephew.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice; children, Edwin (Karen) of Silver Bay, Laura (Steve) of Aurora, and Kevin (Laurie) of Silver Bay; grandsons, Zachary, Timothy (Missy), Thomas, Trenten, Tyler, Jordan, Trevor, Evan, and Collin; a great-granddaughter Olivia; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, August 17, 2012, at the Bay Area Vineyard in Silver Bay. Lunch will be served following the service.
