Helen “Harriet” Carroll, 85, of Duluth, formerly of Two Harbors, died on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at the Benedictine Health Center.

Helen “Harriet” Carroll, 85, of Duluth, formerly of Two Harbors, died on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012, at the Benedictine Health Center.

She was born on June 9, 1927, to Axel and Helen Larson in Two Harbors where she grew up and attended school, graduating from Two Harbors High School in 1945.

After high school, Harriet was a secretary at Camp McCoy, Wis. She returned to Two Harbors and married Willard Freeberg in 1947; he died in 1950. In 1959, Harriet married Donald Carroll. They lived in Two Harbors where they raised four children. Harriet was employed by Lake County in the assessor’s office from 1951 until her retirement and Don was co-owner and manager of the Two Harbors IGA grocery store.

After Don’s death in 1997, Harriet moved to the Chester Park area in Duluth where she enjoyed working on her home and visits from her family. She was a member of the Chester Park United Methodist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 109. Some of her many talents included sewing, playing piano, oil painting, baking, canning and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents Axel and Helen Larson; husband Willard Freeberg and Donald Carroll; siblings Raymond, Philip, James, Jeanette and Lois; and son Charles Freeberg.

She is survived by daughters Nancy (Ted) Freeberg Kluznik of Woodbury and Ann (Brian) Dwyer of Two Harbors; son Timothy Carroll of Hermantown; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the staff at Westwood Assisted Living, Westwood Terrace, Benedictine Health Center, Solvay Hospice House and Essentia Health Hospice for the special love and extraordinary kindness they showed Harriet.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 17, from 1-2:30 p.m. at the Westwood Terrace Community Room, 925 Kenwood Avenue, Duluth. In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Essentia Health Hospice or Benedictine Health Center. A burial service will be held at a later date at the Lakeview Cemetery in Two Harbors.
