Axel Carlson, 87, of Silver Bay, left this earthly life to be with our Lord on Friday, January 6, 2012.

He was born March 17, 1924, in Sturgeon Lake, Minn. and was preceded in death by his parents Peter Carlson and Esther (Ole) Gvesrude. He was united in marriage to Hilda Wagner on February 26, 1949. They were blessed with two sons. Axel worked for 30 years for Reserve Mining Company. He joined the company in Babbitt for two years and then moved to Silver Bay in 1955.

Axel was an avid hunter, fisherman, and enjoyed camping and traveling. He was a member of United Protestant Church Silver Bay, VFW 6204, and North Shore Golden Agers.

Axel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Hilda; sons Gregg of Grand Rapids and Rick (Daniel Fristoe) of Minneapolis; grandchildren Erik Carlson (Angela) of Wasilla, Alaska, Tessa Kuchenmeister (Peter) of Bemidji, Jessica O’Hehir Johnson (Thomas) of Bloomington, and Bethany Carlson (Yannich) of Bloomington; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces, cousins, and many dear friends. He is also survived by his dear sister Marion (Jim) Jones of Ventura, Cali.

Visitation will be one hour before the memorial service. Service will be at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th, 2012 at United Protestant Church in Silver Bay.
