Delray W. Pearson

Delray W Pearson, 91, passed away at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Dec. 30, 2009.

Delray W Pearson, 91, passed away at the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage, Calif., Dec. 30, 2009. Del was on vacation with his wife, children and grandchildren at the time of his passing.

A family memorial service was held on Jan. 2 at the Forest Lawn Mortuary in Palm Springs.

Del was born in Two Harbors Oct. 9, 1918, the only son of Walfred and Hannah Pearson. Del lived his entire life in Two Harbors except for the four years he was in the United States Army during World War II.

Del volunteered and was proud to serve and saw action in North Africa and Europe as a sergeant.

Del married the love of his life, Mary Ann Freeburg, on Feb. 6, 1948, and they would have celebrated their 62nd anniversary next month.

Del is survived by Mary Ann and his two children, Mark Pearson of St. George, Utah, and Vicki Pearson of Malibu, Calif. Del was also survived by his three grandsons, Juan Barragan Pearson of Santa Barbara, and Mark Pearson Jr. and Nicholas Pearson of St. George, and his sister Janet Lange of North Hollywood.

Del was a noted businessman in the Two Harbors area and was a principal owner of many local businesses including Pearson Motors, the Harbor Landing Mall, Harbor Square (now Home Video), Scenic Point Resort and Superior Shores Resort. His entrepreneurial spirit also led him to manage the Lake County school bus system, start the first taxicab service in Two Harbors, open the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in the area and develop other businesses and rental properties.

Del was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church, the AAD Shrine Temple, American Legion Post 109, VFW Post 445, the Two Harbors Chamber of Commerce, the Two Harbors Rotary club, the Lake County Humane Society and he was a 50-year member of Masonic Lodge 188.

Del enjoyed many happy times at the family cabin on Thomas Lake and was an avid hunter and fisherman during those years.

In his later years Del enjoyed traveling and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Del was preceded in death by both of his parents and numerous aunts and uncles. Del will be greatly missed and will always be remembered for his sense of humor, his compassion, his love of animals and his love of life.

A memorial service and military burial are being planned for the late spring in Two Harbors.
