Mary Ward of Duluth enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps just after the Vietnam War, as it was transitioning into the rest of the Army. She was awarded the Army Commendation Medal, the peacetime equivalent of the Bronze Star for her service while running a medical clinic at Madigan Army Medical Center in Washington state.
