Removing engines

Crews worked to take the first of three engines off the CN tracks near Boomers Road at the Duluth Ready-Mix Concrete pits 12 miles north of Two Harbors. The engine, taken off around 12:30 p.m. Friday, was the third engine on the train carrying empty ore cars from Two Harbors. The damage to the engine was likely from an empty car striking it as the lead engine collided with a full southbound train Thursday afternoon.

The clean-up crew had to bring dirt in to shore up the roads next to the tracks to allow the cranes to carry the engines off the tracks and into the pit area for further inspection. Overnight, cars were separated from the engines and moved. The six engines were all that remained near the Boomers crossing.
