Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on the Highway 61 expressway near Two Harbors early Friday.
The Minnesota State Patrol reported that the crash happened just after 2 a.m. in the northbound lanes between Larsmont and Isackson roads. A Chevrolet pickup truck traveling northbound at a high rate of speed rear-ended a Honda Accord that was traveling at about the 65 mph speed limit. Both vehicles lost control and ended up in the right-side ditch; the pickup rolled once, ejecting the driver.
The driver of the pickup, Daniel Higgs, 25, of Two Harbors, was transported by ambulance to St. Luke's hospital in Duluth with what the Patrol called serious injuries, though he was alert and talking after the crash, officials said. The Patrol reported that Higgs was not wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was detected in his system, but did not say if that was a factor in the crash.
The driver of the Accord, Anastasia Hanson, 21, of Richfield, Minn., was transported to Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors with non-life-threatening injuries. She was wearing a seat belt, the Patrol reported.
