The city of Duluth’s efforts to extend the Lakewalk trail system farther east will spur traffic detours starting today.
The Lakewalk extension work will include a pedestrian tunnel that
allows users to safely cross under Minnesota Highway 61.
That work, slated to begin today, will force the closure of Highway 61 (Congdon Boulevard) north of 61st Avenue East. Highway 61 and Scenic 61 traffic will be detoured to East Superior Street and 60th Avenue East.
A temporary traffic signal will be in use at the intersection of 60th Avenue East and Superior Street while the detour is in effect.
Construction of the pedestrian tunnel is scheduled to be completed and the detour removed by June 19. Drivers are advised to take alternate routes around the construction if possible.
