Despite a harrowing car accident before their first match, the Margie Smith rink went on capture the USA Curling Senior National Championships women’s title Sunday night in Fairbanks, Alaska.

Smith’s team, which includes Norma O’Leary of Silver Bay and Lucy DeVore of Superior, went 6-0 in round-robin play and defeated the hometown rink of Kathy Shuttleworth 5-4 in the finals.

Upon arriving at the tournament, the team members’ rental car was hit by a semi-truck and flipped over.

  • In the men’s tournament, the Gert Messing rink of New York was crowned champion after a 7-4 win over North Dakota’s Dave Jensen. Jensen’s team eliminated Paul Pustovar of Hibbing 6-3 in the semifinals Sunday.

    The men’s and women’s winners will represent the U.S. at the world championships April 13-20 in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
