UPDATE: One person killed in Highway 61 crash along North ShoreOne lane of Minnesota Highway 61 has reopened after a fatal crash along the North Shore earlier today.

One person was killed Friday afternoon in a two-car collision on Highway 61 along the North Shore.
The crash happened west of the Lafayette Bluff Tunnel, about 7 miles northeast of Two Harbors, just after 3 p.m. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a Honda Civic was traveling northbound when it spun out and went sideways. It was struck on the passenger side by a southbound Chevrolet Malibu.
The driver of the northbound Civic died. Road conditions were icy at the time, the Patrol reported. The identities of those involved in the crash are slated to be released today.
The collision closed Highway 61 in both directions for a time. One lane was reopened about 90 minutes after the crash, with both lanes reopened by 7 p.m.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the scene.
