The Mariners fell to Chisholm, 42-14, at home in a contest that they let get away from them. The Mariners ran 71 plays from scrimmage compared to 45 for the Bluestreaks. The Mariners twice fell short on downs or time while within the Bluestreak 15-yard line in the first half and one turnover led directly to a touchdown.
After getting the ball on the Bluestreak 48 following a punt, the Bay needed six plays to hit paydirt. Luke Small found his brother Mark for a 33-yard pass and a score and a 6-0 lead.The Bluestreaks tied it up on a 13-yard run by Lance Klimek and took the lead when Logan Peratalo returned a Mariner fumble 56 yards for another TD. The Mariners turned it over on downs and the Bluestreaks went 55 yards in eight plays with a pass of 17 yards from quarterback Mitchell Rusten to Aaron Mushberger, completing the drive. The Mariners punted and got the ball back at the Bluestreak 21 on a fumble recovery by Cody Peterson. The Mariner drive died at the 15, but they got it back via a punt at the Chisholm 37, only to see that drive die at the 1-foot line as the first half ended and the Bluestreaks were ahead by 20-6.
The second half saw the Mariners punt and get it right back when Michael Klofstad recovered a fumble at the Bluestreak 40. The Mariners gave it back when they couldn’t convert on a 4th and 1. The next play saw Austin Campbell race 66 yards for a 28-6 lead in favor of Chisholm. Peratalo ran in for another score from one yard out to make it 36-6 before the Mariners would get on the board again. Eben Fischer ran in from five yards to complete the Mariners scoring with his brother Michael running in for the two-point conversion. Nick Perfetto kicked an onside kick for the Bay that was recovered by Luke Small, but an interception ended that drive. Greyson Hartshorn scored on a run of one yard to complete the game’s scoring.
Michael Fischer rushed for 120 yards for the Mariners and Austin Campbell had 107 for the Bluestreaks. Small completed five of 14 passes for 60 yards and one TD, and Rusten was three of five for Chisholm for 43 yards and one TD. Small and Brandon Johnson each had seven tackles to lead the Mariner defense, followed by Eben Fischer with five and Michael Fischer with four.
The Mariners completed their regular season Wednesday with a game at South Ridge, the No. 2-ranked team in their section. As of now, it looks like the Mariners will travel to Hill City for a first-round playoff game.
The volleyball team fell to Cook County in a rematch by a score of 25-23, 10-25, 24-26 and 17-25. When they met earlier, the score was 16-25, 13-25 and 5-25. They showed a lot of improvement. Sydney Topp had 11 kills and three blocks; Brandi Nopola had three ace serves, and Brooke McMillan had 18 set assists.
