Things looked great going into last Thursday’s playoff game for the Agates. They had ended a tough losing streak with a tie and three wins for their last three games of the season.
“It was huge for us,” coach Jeff Peterson said, especially the win against highly-seeded Proctor.
The momentum didn’t carry over into their playoff game against Cloquet, though – the girls lost 0-4.
“We didn’t come out with the fire that I had hoped to,” Peterson said.
Junior Sam Dewey had 10 saves in the net.
The junior varsity squad ended its season on a high note, though, defeating Eveleth-Gilbert at home 4-1. A number of varsity players joined the game. Seventh-grader Elisa Galyen scored the first goal with an assist from seventh-grader Sami Szendry. Ninth-grader Emillie Deming scored the second goal with an assist from seventh-grader Olivia Kempfert and sophomore Meg Peterson scored the third goal, a header. Grace Hietala, seventh-grader, scored the final goal with an assist from eighth-grader Kaija Schlangen. Peterson said eighth-grader Carina Hebl had a strong game in goal.
There are no seniors graduating this year.
“Next year it’s going to be a real trip to see who makes the varsity roster. It’ll come down to who puts the most work in the off-season,” Peterson said.
