Five Two Harbors High School students attended the 49th Nobel Conference at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn., on Oct. 1-2. This year’s theme was “The Universe at its Limits.”
Courtney Anderson, Drew Christensen, Owen Cruikshank, Krista Keranen and Lane Schraufnagel had an opportunity to attend eight presentations by world renowned scientists—three of them Nobel Laureates. The conference explored questions about the origins and make-up of the universe and what adventures lay ahead.
The students met Dr. Alexei Filippenko, professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley who among his many accomplishments, was awarded the 1992 Newton Lacy Pierce Prize of the American Astronomical Society, the 1997 Robert M. Petrie Prize of the Canadian Astronomical Society, and was a Guggenheim Fellow in 2001. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2009, Filippenko also leads the world’s most successful robotic search for exploding stars.
