October veteran's benefits news
By: From Vince Sando, Lake County News Chronicle
The State Soldier’s Assistance Program (SSAP) offers assistance for dental, optical, subsistence, and special needs (on a case-by-case basis) for low-income veterans who meet income and asset eligibility requirements. Call the Veterans Service Office, or visiting the following websites: www.mn.gov/mdva, or https://linkvet.custhelp.com/.
Non-VA Care (formerly known as “Fee Basis”): Non-VA care is medical care provided to eligible veterans outside of VA when VA facilities are not available. Remember: A pre-authorization for treatment in the community is required - unless the medical event is an emergency.
eBenefits and My HealtheVet: Veterans are encouraged to establish eBenefit and My HealtheVet accounts. eBenefits (www.ebenefits.va.gov) is a safe, secure way to track claims, benefit payment histories, and obtain some VA documents (e.g. Summary of Benefits letter, or home loan certificate of eligibility). With My HealtheVet (www.myhealth.va.gov), a veteran can reorder prescriptions online and look up health information.
Veterans Flag Salute: Legislation signed into law in 2008 authorized veterans to hand-salute the U.S. Flag during the National Anthem, raising and lowering, as it passes in review, and during the Pledge of Allegiance.
Flag Retirement: Private citizens can conduct simple, dignified ceremonies. A simple, dignified ceremony can consist of a few words indicating how the flag has proudly served this nation and its ideals, a fire hot enough to consume the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, or a brief period of silent reflection. After the flag is consumed, put out the fire and bury the ashes if possible. Showing respect and honor the flag are general rules.
Veteran’ Day Veteran’s Walk: Do the veterans of Lake County want to explore the idea of having an event like this on Veterans Day, Monday, Nov. 11? Uniform or civilian clothing would be the mode of dress. Ideas? Feedback? If enough interest is shown, an event may be planned. Call the Veterans Service Office at 834-8326, or the American Legion in Two Harbors at 218-834-4141.
