Lake County cited in death of heavy-equipment operator

Lake County has received three citations from the Minnesota Occupational Safety and Health Administration in the death of Lee Roy Jacobson, with fines totaling more than $30,000. Jacobson, a heavy-equipment operator for the county, died in May after the excavator he was operating fell into a river near where he had been clearing ice.
County Administrator Matt Huddleston said at Tuesday’s board meeting that the county contested the citations, and OSHA and the county are negotiating a settlement.
“We’re trying to make the best decision,” Huddleston said.
Since the parties are still in negotiation, no more details are currently available. OSHA is the division of the United States Department of Labor that ensures healthy and safe working conditions.
