The 8th annual Bay to Bay Run and Walk was held on Saturday, July 13. Under light rain and temperature of 67 degrees, 144 people finished the race—a new record. They started at the Mary Mac building in Silver Bay at 8:45 a.m., proceeded along Penn Avenue and joined the Superior Hiking Trail for more than 3 miles, finally racing down County 4 to Beaver Bay. The trail was muddy and slippery due to previous rains.
The winner was Eric Kiekow, from Duluth, with a time of 47:49.1. In second place was Justin Niederhaus, 14, of Indiana. Niederhaus, “The Indiana Connection” has come to the Bay to Bay race for several years, beginning when he was just 10- years old.
The race’s youngest runner was Mann Ollman, 8, of Silver Bay; the oldest runner was Lutsen’s Bill Blank, 68.
The female winner of the run was Anja Maijala of Wrenshall, Minn., with a time of 1:01:34.3 and the winner of the walk was Lisa Topp who came in at 1:26:09.6.
The race director was Tom Clifford. Blue Line Club managed the race. Sponsors were North Shore Credit Union and Bodies In Balance.
