Vertical Endeavors at the Library?!
The North Shore of Lake Superior is home to great cliffs that are just perfect for climbing. Whether you are an avid climbing enthusiast or just interested in finding out what those crazy climbers are up to, this is the program for you. Vertical Endeavors, a regional climbing company, will send a presenter to the library with a full pack of equipment, awesome photos, and great climbing stories. There will also be a drawing for free climbing passes! The program should be of interest to all ages, and will be held Wednesday, July 24, at 6 p.m.
The Teen Anime Club is meeting on Thursday, July 25, at 12 p.m. We’ll continue watching our current series and talk about the latest manga added to the library’s collection. Haven’t seen the new volumes yet? Stop by the library in the meantime and check them out! Also, remember that attendance in library events earns you free entries into the Teen summer reading prize drawing - and we’re talking about $$$! If you haven’t signed up for the summer reading program yet, it’s not too late!
Resource Spotlight: Learning Express
One of the online resources available through the library is Learning Express, a treasure trove of career and skill-building options. There are practice tests for the SAT and other academic tests, real estate and other licensure tests, civil service tests, armed forces aptitude tests, and others. Another area includes tutorials for Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and other popular software. There are also skill-builders for various subjects and other career exploration tools. Whether you are a young person considering a career path, someone looking at a career change or a person getting ready for a specific test, Learning Express may help. Find it through the library website. Go into “Library Resource,” then to “Free Online Databases and Research Tools.” Scroll down to “Learning Express;” it’s third in the list. Create a free account with your library card number, with a user name and password you choose. A handout is available at the library. Learning Express is made available through the Arrowhead Library System.
Author Diane Bradley visits THPL
Author Diane Bradley shows the pile of rewrites that were necessary before her book Wilder’s Edge was published. Now Diane Bradley-Kantor, she lives in Indiana, spending summers on Rainy Lake, and chose Diane Bradley, the same name she had growing up near Two Harbors, as her pen name. At an author talk July 15 at Two Harbors Public Library, she told about the two-year journey to get the book published, and the story of how she became interested in the history of gold mining and bootlegging at Rainy Lake. Both topics are woven into a story of adventure and mystery for three kids spending the summer there. Bradley-Kantor has written other types of children’s books as a change of pace from her career as a college physics professor; Wilder’s Edge is the first one to be published.
