As you know Finland suffered a tremendous loss Saturday night with the total loss of Zion Lutheran Church. Lightning struck the church shortly before 9 p.m. Thank you to all the responding fire departments up and down the shore that fought a hard battle throughout the night. We are very thankful that no one was hurt. Thank you to all for your prayers, caring thoughts and hugs through this difficult time.
On Sunday afternoon, Ruth Himes and Judy Martell were visited by Judy Linman and Frank Eld. Frank is from Donnelly, Idaho, and was here in Finland a few years ago. You might remember him around town in his log cabin-looking pick-up, which he calls “Finnebago”. At that time he was taking pictures and writing a book about Finnish log buildings in the area. David Geist introduced him to Ruth and Judy, taking pictures of their Finnish sauna. He has now completed the book , “Finnish Log Custom: The Art,” and gave Ruth a copy, which also included pictures of the Kalander family house before the logs were covered, with Ruth’s father Toivio and daughter Mary standing by it. Also in the book is a picture of the sauna at the Finland Historical Site. Ruth reported that Frank is a very interesting person and has done a lot of photography in Finland, Europe and throughout the United States.
