Toni Rasmussen and Alicia Norman have teamed up to offer salon services and tanning in Two Harbors.
The Two Harbors natives opened Envy Salon and Tanning on April 24, bringing 22 years of combined experience to their new venture.
“I wanted to get back into Two Harbors,” Rasmussen said, after spending eight years working in Duluth.
Rasmussen co-owned a salon in Duluth for four years, but stepped away from that company recently and started working once a month at a Park Lane Beauty Chateau in Two Harbors. It turned out that once a month wasn’t often enough for her clients — her days filled up quickly with hair appointments and she was working 12-hour shifts to satisfy the demand.
When Rasmussen returned to Two Harbors, Norman started going to her for haircuts. Shortly after that, Norman found out that Home Video and Tanning in Two Harbors was closing. She had worked there for 12 years and had the opportunity to purchase their tanning beds.
Over the course of a few conversations, the two women decided it was the perfect time to open a business where Rasmussen could expand her hours and Norman could offer tanning.
“It was meant to be,” Norman said.
They found the location for their new business at 1503 Seventh Avenue in a space formerly occupied by Curves Fitness Center. There was even a tanning bed still in the building, which Norman purchased, bringing the grand total of beds to three.
The women recruited their husbands and another helper, Seth Christiansen, to remodel their new salon. They fixed up the interior and built hair washing and styling stations. The inside of the salon is now painted in pastel hues, with Lake Superior-inspired watercolors hang on the walls, creating a light, calming atmosphere. Local artist Linda Hoffman created the pieces that grace the walls. Rasmussen said the art display will rotate every eight weeks and that pieces are available for purchase.
In the month since they’ve opened, Rasmussen said business has been steady. Independent stylist Heather DeCorsey is offering her services in the salon, too. DeCorsey, also from Two Harbors, has five years of experience styling and cutting hair.
After much research and some advice from her doctor, Rasmussen decided to offer only eco-friendly, natural hair products. It’s not only better for the stylists but gentler and safer for clients, too, she said.
They use Hempz and MoroccanOil hair products, which are paraben-, sulfate- and phosphate-free. For dye jobs, they use Schwarzkopf, which is ammonia-free and organic but performs as well, or better, than traditional dyes, Rasmussen said. As for tanning, the selection of products is extensive—and most are available to sample.
The women said they are excited about their new venture. They chatted enthusiastically with the Lake County News-Chronicle about all of the services and products they offer and the future of the salon. One aspect they say they’ll build on is their work on behalf of charitable organizations and causes. They are currently donating $1 from every product sold to Oklahoma tornado relief and hope to find creative ways to support nonprofits in the future.
The tanning and hair salon is open Tuesday through Saturday. Hair services are offered 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays. Tanning is walk-in only and the beds are open 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.
A hair cut costs $25-30 for women and $15-20 for men, and includes a wash and style. Tanning prices vary based on the bed and package deals, but range from $2.50-10 per session. The salon offers two low pressure stand-up beds and one medium pressure horizontal bed.
