Young artists put work on display

A group of youngsters has filled the upstairs of the Vanilla Bean Café with their artwork. The exhibit is a display of work from Arlee Wilkes’ watercolor students, who range in age from 4 to 16.
Wilkes began teaching watercolor more than 20 years ago as a way to unwind from her job. Now that she’s retired, she offers more courses, including two per week for kids and one for adults.
“Anyone can paint,” she said, noting that she tries to let her students find their individual style. The difference in style is evident in a row of paintings displayed along the back wall of the Vanilla Bean Café. Three are scenes of oranges and two are depictions of sunflowers, but all are strikingly different in their usage of color and placement.
The grand opening for the exhibit was last Saturday and it will be on display at the Vanilla Bean Café on Seventh Avenue throughout the month of May.
