Special flag arrives at Silver Creek Early Learning Center

The children at Silver Creek Early Learning Center received a very special package recently – an American flag that once flew over the U.S. Capitol building.
The center’s owner and teacher, Erin Carlson said the box arrived and there was much excitement among her students. The four-year old scholars have been learning about citizenship and government in the classroom.
“We’ve talked about Flag Day and Election Day and we looked at pictures of the U.S. Capitol with the flag flying over it, so the kids were able to make that connection,” she said.
Carlson said that people are surprised to learn that these flags are made available to the public, and that ordering is as easy as downloading a form, writing a check and waiting for delivery. In fact, this is not the first time she’s purchased a capitol flag.
“My parents had always had capitol flags and my husband and I bought them two new ones a few years ago. So when it was time to purchase a flag for our preschool, I knew the perfect avenue to take,” she said, adding, “anyone can order flags that fly over the U.S. Capitol from their U.S. senator’s office. If you go to Al Franken or Amy Klobachar’s website, there is a form to fill out and mail in for purchase.”
The flags can be ordered in three different sizes, in cotton or nylon and purchasers can request that a flag be flown over the Capitol in honor of a special event or person. It will then be sent to its recipient within six weeks, nicely folded and boxed.
Carlson said that she and her students are looking forward to giving Old Glory a place of honor at Silver Creek Early Learning Center. In the meantime they’re awaiting the completion of some building renovations.
“The flag has flown over the U.S. Capitol, so it’s a very special addition to our classroom, she said, “we have temporarily hung it in our playground area until we are able to permanently mount the bracket for the flag at our new entrance.”
