On Saturday, April 20, the Two Harbors Moose Lodge will be hosting a smelt fry. The event is open to the public and will be a fund raiser for its scholarship fund and the Two Harbors Area Food Shelf.
There are no smelt running in local waters, but that hasn’t dampened the enthusiasm or resourcefulness of the folks at the lodge.
“We’ve ordered 160 pounds, I believe, and if we run out we’ve got white fish, “ said Ron Blaisdell, one of the organizers of the event and a Moose Lodge member for 27 years.
Just $8 buys a sizzling portion of smelt and french fries and a side of cole slaw. Milk and coffee will be available, too. Diners can support the food shelf by donating cash at the Moose Lodge or by bringing a non-perishable food item.
“Cash is preferred, but they’re glad to accept any donation,” said Blaisdell. In fact the food shelf can purchase foods from larger food banks for far less than the grocery store price, so dollars go farther and more hungry people can be fed.
According to Blaisdell, this is the second smelt fry the Moose Lodge has held in recent years, but the last one was open to members only. This year is different.
“The Moose is a members only club, but this is open to the community because it’s a community service event. The food shelf has a need, so we want to help,” he said.
The Moose Lodge is located at 109 First Avenue in Two Harbors and the smelt fry will be held 2-8 p.m.
