Letter to the editor: County positions shouldn’t be appointed
By: From Mark Broin, Larsmont, Lake County News Chronicle
I read the article in the Chronicle regarding the Lake County Commissioners wanting to make the offices of Recorder and Auditor - Treasurer appointed by the County Board, rather than elected. They have convinced Tom Bakk and John Saxhaug in the Senate, and David Dill in the House, to introduce bills to make those changes effective without county voter approval.
It seems to me, making that change would be like letting the fox appoint himself to guard the henhouse, particularly when it comes to any voter-approved independent oversight of county spending. I really don’t agree with the commissioners’ recommendation, and urge everyone who feels the same to contact their commissioner, and the legislative sponsors of the bills, to ask for withdrawal.
In the article, I found it interesting to note Commissioner Paul Bergman was quoted justifying the move, saying “Someone who was popular in Two Harbors with limited qualifications could get that job through an election. …”.
That statement got me to thinking: How do the commissioners think they got their jobs.
