Letter to the editor: Kudos to our Minnesota legislature for same sex marriage bills
By: From Susan Hilliard, Two Harbors, Lake County News Chronicle
I was so pleased last week when committees in our Minnesota Legislature moved to send bills to the full Legislature for vote. Both SF925 and HF1054 will allow for same-sex marriage in Minnesota. Last fall we defeated the effort to define marriage in our constitution as only between one man and one woman. I’m excited that this conversation continues and more and more people are recognizing that love is basic to all of us, and that to deny the right to express that love for one another through the rite of marriage is simply wrong.
I am happily married to my husband and it troubles me to realize that not every one of my friends and family is free to embrace that same happiness. I know so many loving couples who are denied the right to marry simply because they deeply love someone of the same sex. The love they share is as strong as the love my husband and I share and their commitment to each other is just as enduring. The time has come to make Minnesota proud and allow equal rights to all, regardless of sexual orientation. Thanks to those elected officials who want to see it happen soon.
