- Terrific Tigers
The Lake County News Chronicle office was a hive of activity this week when a pack of busy Tiger Cub Scouts came to visit and learn about journalism. The eight young reporters were accompanied by several parent helpers, their leader Jennifer Niemi, and a couple of Tiger Cub siblings who joined in the fun.
After everyone had an opportunity to fill a cup at the water cooler, which seemed to hold particular fascination for the group, they embarked on a tour of the office. They took a look at some of the antique equipment and trays of letters, numbers and symbols that were used to print stories back before the advent of computers and modern presses. Later, they perused the archived volumes of past papers from the year they were born and noted that one of the News-Chronicle’s former columnists wore a mask “like a wrestler,” an oddity beyond the editor’s ability to explain.
They posed many thoughtful questions and when asked if anyone thought he’d like to be a reporter someday, one little guy replied,” maybe when I’m like a hundred (years old).”
Interests among the group leaned more toward outdoor activities. Zach V., Rebel K., David P., and Cory P., said they like sports and Riley N. said he enjoys playing in the snow. Video games are popular pass times among AJ M., and Trevor K., and AJ J. David W., reported that he enjoys games in general.
Danielle M., sister of one of the Tigers and the only girl in the bunch, said “playing Barbies” is her favorite activity.
Toward the end of the visit, everyone spent some time writing in real reporter notebooks and posing for photos. When they departed, the lively chatter and restless activity went with them. The office was restored to its usual Monday evening stillness, which the editor found just a little too quiet after the evening’s excitement.
