Rink Rat tourney results
The team of Charlie Byrnes, Cory Nelson and Troy LeBlanc won the 10th annual 3 on 3 Rink Rat tournament at Rukavina Arena on Monday. The top goalie whose name also goes on the trophy was Kyle Ekstrom. Runner-up was the team of Nate Breden, Wade LeBlanc and Sam Andrus.
Huss named all-conference
Former Mariner Biz Huss was named to the MIAC all-conference hockey team for the second straight season. She was second for scoring for Bethel and No.9 in the conference.
Peewee B hockey
The Silver Bay Peewee B team failed to advance from the North Regional held at Rukavina Arena. They lost two out of three games. They opened play on Friday with a 6-4 win over East Grand Forks with five different players scoring goals. After falling behind 2-0 seven minutes into the game they came back with three goals from Andrew Miller, Peyton Westerlund and Giovanni Marolt for a 3-2 lead after one period of play. Ethan Sporn scored to give them a 4-3 lead after two, after East Grand had tied it at three.
East Grand once again tied it up at four, 5:19 into period three only to see Josh Prom score the game winner for Silver Bay 13 seconds later. Sporn iced it with an empty net goal. Cameron Roy had 18 saves to pick up the victory in the Silver Bay nets as Silver Bay was outshot 22-20.
Silver Bay didn’t do nearly as well on Saturday, as they lost both of their games and were eliminated. Bemidji scored twice in the first on their way to a 3-0 win. Chase Bronikowski had 21 saves for Silver Bay, as they were outshot 24-19.
Game three proved to be a real heartbreaker as Silver Bay fell 3-2 to Moose Lake in double overtime after leading 2-0 after two. Marolt and Sporn scored in period two to give Silver Bay its 2-0 lead. Moose Lake cut its deficit to one with 4:58 left to play and tied with 8.5 ticks left on the clock, as the Rebels outshot the Silver Bay 11-0 in the final period. Dillon Louzek scored the game winner 1:26 into the second OT. Roy finished the game with 28 saves while his counterpart had to stop only 12.
Moose Lake went on to defeat Bemidji 3-2 for the No.2 seed to State out of this region. Hallock went unbeaten to take the No.1 seed.
North Shore Bantam A hockey
The North Shore Bantam A team lost twice at Warroad in the North Regional. They lost their first game 4-1 to East Grand Forks, the eventual champion, and then fell 4-3 to Hermantown.
Anna Carman had a goal and an assist for the Fire as they defeated the Ice 4-0 at the 9th annual K1 Girls All Star hockey game at Cloquet. Rebecca Dilley was also on the winning team on defense. She went on to play for Section 7 at the Senior Classic. That team lost 3-2 to Section 8, beat Section 3, by a score of 10-2 and lost 4-1 to Section 2 in pool play. They went on to play section 4 in the fifth place game.
