Beaver Bay Man Holds Party
Joseph Betzler, the well-known pioneer of Beaver bay, gave a big party to his friends on Saturday, Feb. 22, to celebrate his and George Washington’s birthday. Those who attended numbered over 200 and noted that in spite of sharing birthdays, Joseph and George have little in common. George couldn’t tell a lie, Joseph wouldn’t; Joseph is very much alive; and although George is the Father of Our County, Joseph is the father of Twenty one children. Mr. Betzler is one of the first white settlers at Beaver Bay where he has made a good farm and home in the wilderness.

The year 1913 is confidently looked forward to as a banner year in railroad activities. Nothing but an extensive crop failure can prevent this, according to statements made by men prominent in railroad affairs.

Ski stunts set for new hill Sunday afternoon
A very fine ski slide has been built by a group on South Avenue under the direction of Veiko Englelin and an exhibition will be held at 2 p.m. , Sunday. The following Sunday there will be jumping contests.
Diminutive infant grows
Carl Edward, the 2 1/2 pound infant born to Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Carlson at the Two Harbors Hospital is progressing very favorably and now weighs 3 pounds 9 ounces. The child was fed for a time with a dropper, now he is tube-fed every three hours at an ounce and half ration and yesterday made a gain of two ounces. He is kept in an improvised incubator and is the pride of the nurses, all of whom take a great interest in his welfare and progress.

Local girl to compete in pageant
Julie Anne Hoganson will represent the Two Harbors Jaycees in the Minnesota Junior Miss Pageant this week in Duluth. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lorne Hoganson will compete with other representatives from throughout Minnesota for scholarships worth $1,500. All candidates must have a B average or higher, be of good character and possess poise, personality, intelligence, charm and beauty of face and figure and display a three-minute routine of talent.
Marriage, births hold statistic edge
Births held a huge edge over deaths in Lake County during 1961, J. R. Lindgren, clerk of district court, noted today in his annual statistics. There were 83 deaths compared to 323 births. And for those who maintain that marriages these days “just don’t last”, Lindgren offers figures as proof that cupid isn’t doing too badly with 92 marriages recorded as compared to only 14 divorces and one annulment.

Minnesota Hydraulics reaches end of the road
Despite the determination of its founder and a series of emergency loans from Lake County, Minnesota Hydraulics has shut down after less than a year in business. The company began building heavy duty log loaders last spring on a shoestring budget but was able to design, produce and sell three loaders catching the interest of dealers in four states according to Michael Harvey, company president.
Leap year babies keep parents waiting
Two mischievous little boys made their parents wait a week and then arrived on the most unique day of this year. Scott Joseph Brelie, son of Chris and Diane Brelie and Timothy William Kallinen, son of Ed and Karen Kallinen were born Feb. 29 at Lake View Memorial Hospital, a week overdue making them official leap year babies. Since both sets of parents had attended childbirth classes together, perhaps it’s not so unusual that the boys would want to keep the togetherness going.
