Two Harbors teams dominate in North Shore hoops rivalry
The Mariners faced the Agates at William Kelley High School last Friday in a double header. The girls played first at 4:45 p.m. and the boys followed at 6:15.
The Agate girls set the tone for the night, easily fending off the Mariners in a 46-14 win. Sophomore Casey Cross led the way for the Agates, sinking 12 points. Sophomore Brianna Stuberud notched 11 more in the win. Senior Alicia Nopola led the Mariners with 7 points with sophomore Tara Dow and junior Brandi Nopola the only other players to put any points on the board.
The boys followed the pattern, with the Agates topping the Mariners 62-54. The game seemed decided after the first half, with the Agates ahead 26-11. The Mariners, however, didn’t go down without a fight; they scored 43 points in the second half to the Agates’ 36.
Sophomore Alex Lemke scored 23 points to lead the Agates, while senior Trygve Lodin and senior Charlie Pavlisich scored 15 and 13 respectively. Senior Kyle Blood scored 28 points for the Mariners. Junior Eben Fischer was next with 12 points and sophomore Spencer Tiboni sank 3 three-point shots during the game.
The Silver Bay girls sit at the bottom of the Polar League with a 3-15 record, just above Wrenshall. The Agate girls are one step above them with a 4-19 record. The Mariner boys are 0-14, putting them just one step above bottom-ranked McGregor in the league, while the Agates are one step above them at 5-13.
Two Harbors boys put up a good fight against MLWR
The Agates almost pulled off a Cinderella story last Tuesday against the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels. The Rebels are ranked second in the Polar League with a 14-7 record, while the Agates are third from the bottom with a 5-13 record. The numbers predicted an easy win for the Rebels.
However, the Agates weren’t ready to accept defeat. The came out on fire, keeping pace with the 34 points scored by the Rebels in the first half by sinking 25 of their own. They played even harder in the second half, and managed to catch up to MLWR, keeping them on their toes until the buzzer and ending the game in a tie. The dramatic game went into overtime, where the Agates couldn’t hold on. The Rebels ended up winning by just three points, 66-63, in a memorable contest on the Agates home court.
Pavlisich sank 26 points and sophomore Kyler Kinn tallied 22. MLWR player Brad Fossum led the Rebels with 16 points.
The Agates then faced Lakeview Christian Academy (11-9) on Thursday and fell to the powerhouse Broman brothers. Anders Broman, who has already signed on to play with Division I school South Dakota State University next year, scored 29 points and his younger brother Bjorn scored 22. Lemke led the Agates with 17 points and Pavlisich had 10 in the 80-48 contest.
Two Harbors girls fall to Virginia
The Blue Devils took the game away from the Agates during the second half of last Tuesday’s match on Virginia’s court. The first half ended with a score of 20-24, with the Agates keeping pace with the 11-13 Virginia team.
However, the game was decided in the second half, when the Blue Devils added 6 more points to their 4-point lead, securing the 69-59 win. Junior Lane Schraufnagel led the Agates with 15 points and sophomore Briana Stuberud added 12. Caari Toivari came out on top for the Blue Devils, scoring 17 points.
