North Shore Storm

The North Shore Storm started out their two day trip to northwestern Minnesota with a 3-3 tie at Albert Kaiser Arena in Bagley. The Storm had taken a 3-2 lead after two periods of play on goals from Tyler Schramm and Bradley Rowlee, but couldn't hold their advantage. The Flyers tied it up with a power play goal from Christian Larson with 4:39 left in regulation play. The game remained tied after an eight minute sudden death overtime period, with the Storm having a 8-4 shot advantage and one of 36-25 for the game. Zach Duresky finished with 22 stops in the Mariner nets and Andrew Gebhardt had 33 saves for the Flyers. Mike Nordean scored the other Storm goal in the first period which was sandwiched around a pair of goals from Sean LaVine.

At Hallock the Storm were shutout by the Kittson Central Bearcats by a score of 4-0.Four different players scored for the Bearcats who got one in the first period, two in the second and another in the third. The last two came while they were shorthanded. Duresky stopped 37 Bearcat shots as the Storm was outshot 41-13.

Girls’ hockey

The Mariner girls won their seventh game of the season with a 2-1 home victory over the Superior Spartans on Parents’ Night. The Mariners and Spartans battled thru two scoreless periods before someone lit the red light. Tori Stevens struck first for the Mariners at 1:32 of the third for a power play goal that was set up by Rebecca Dilley and Nicole Jaeger. Dilley made it 2-0 when she stuffed in an Anna Carman rebound halfway thru the period. This proved to be the game winner as Kari Miller cut it to 2-1 with 4:29 left to play. Each goaltender, Cassie Swanson of the Mariners and Justine Stenberg of the Spartans finished with 24 saves.

The Mariners concluded their regular season with a 6-1 loss at Grantsburg versus the WSFLG (Webster, Siren, Frederic, Luck and Grantsburg) Blizzard. Parents’ Night had the Blizzard fired up along with the fact that they never beaten the Mariners at home. They scored twice in each period as they outshot the Mariners 35-23. Ashley Dietmier had a hat trick to go with three points from Samantha O'Brien for the Blizzard. Sarah Fjeran had her first varsity goal for the Mariners with assists going to Carman and Dilley. Swanson finished with 26 saves and Sara Carman added 3 more.

The Mariners opened the playoffs Thursday, Feb 7 versus the Proctor/Hermantown Mirage. A loss will end the season for the Mariners.A win will send them on to play either Princeton or International Falls at Cloquet on Tuesday.

Local hockey tourneys coming up

Silver Bay will be hosting the District 11 girls 12U B hockey tournament on Feb. 15-17.Two Harbors will be hosting the Bantam B District 11 tournament Feb. 16-17. While the District 11 Peewee B tournament will be at Hermantown, the North Regional will be held at Silver Bay on March 1-3.Three teams from District 11 will advance to the North Regional. The top three teams in the standings right now are Two Harbors, Silver Bay and Moose Lake. Two teams advance from the regional to state. Two Harbors came in at No.9 in the last state rankings and Silver Bay was at 16.

Former Mariner news

Former Mariner Biz Huss had three goals last weekend for Bethel as they split a pair of games with St.Thomas.
