Helmi M. Laitinen, 91, of Cold Spring, Minn., died Saturday, Jan. 26, at Assumption Home, Cold Spring.
Helmi was born on Dec. 4, 1921 in Menahga, Minn. to John and Annie (Kinnunen) Lake. She married Rudolph Laitinen on Jan. 1, 1942 in Sebeka, Minn. During World War II, Helmi went to Oregon to work in the shipyards as a welder. She was active in church organizations, fire department ladies auxiliary, as an election clerk and in TOPS.
Helmi enjoyed knitting slippers, singing at church and spending time with her family. She was also an avid berry picker, wine maker and ultimate Twins fan. After retirement, she and Rudie traveled extensively.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Rudolph on Jan. 14, 2001; son, Dale R. Laitinen in July of 1998; four brothers, Andrew, Jalmer, Henry and Carl; and one sister, Ellen.
She is survived by her son Milo (Jill) Laitinen of Menahga, Minn.; her daughters Diane (Galen) Brouse of St. Cloud, Minn., Darlene (John) Brunsberg of Cold Spring, Minn. and Gail (Richard) Larson of Esko, Minn; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brothers Leroy (June) Lake of Menahga, Minn. and Raymond (Claudine) Lake of Strafford, Mo.; and sisters Mayme Crackel of Monticello, Minn. and Leila Stansbury of Park Rapids, Minn.
A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 1 p.m. at Benson Funeral Home Chapel, St. Cloud, Minn. A visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery, Two Harbors, Minn.
Memorials are preferred to the Assumption Home in Cold Spring, Minn.
