1913

Season Ends

The Booth Line steamer Easton finished it season last week. This staunch little craft has been sailing along the North Shore of Lake Superior for years, supplying the denizens of that part of the world with the necessities and some of the luxuries of life and has never been damaged during her career outside of what happened to her but a few weeks ago when she went over a ledge near Thunder Cape and hung there a number of hours until her cargo was lightened. The Easton is of 490 gross tonnage, is 155 feet long and 30 feet beam. She was built in 1896 and is one of the staunchest little crafts on the lakes.

Rink Mischief

Several reports are being made in regards to the young boys who attend the Tenth Avenue skating rink. While some behave, there are others who are always in mischief and make it as miserable as possible using profane language in the presence of young girls and stopping up the stove pipes and smoking them out of the warm houses. We understand if violations of this kind are continued, the boys in question will be dealt with accordingly.

1938

Milk ordinance becomes law

Ordinance No. 159 amending ordinance No. 131 was unanimously passed by the city council Monday evening. The new measure provides additional safeguards to the consumers of dairy products in the city and sets up a licensing system making tuberculin and Bang’s tests of all dairy herds from which milk and cream is delivered to consumers of the city.

Earn over $1,000 in 1937, must file a return

It’s income tax time again and 165,000 Minnesota residents are soon going to learn what price the state is setting on their earning capacity. Anyone earning more than $1,000 during 1937 had better obtain a tax blank and make his computation before he decides whether to file a return or just skip it. Intentional failure to file a return makes a prospective taxpayer subject to imprisonment up to seven years, a $1,000 fine or both.

1963

Two Harbors Docks To Close This Year

Another chapter in the history of the once-great Messabi Iron Range came to a close Friday with the announcement that the DM&IR would close down ore shipping operations in Two Harbors. All shipments of ore over the DM&IR during the 1963 shipping season will be handled through Duluth according to D.J. Smith president of the railroad. This results, said Smith, from the ”severe reductions in the tonnages of Minnesota iron ores which mining companies formerly shipped over our railroad”. The decision will result in an estimated loss of 230 jobs in Two Harbors.

Winter blasts hit with bitter cold

For the second week, sub-zero temperatures hit the entire north area, sending mercury to levels well below -30 in all parts of the area. The weatherman relented only for a few hours last Saturday when the mercury managed to get above zero before starting a new plunge that night. By Monday morning of this week, temperatures of the frigid week before had been equaled or surpassed.

1988

Marathon snowshoers tackle trail on Saturday

About 20 athletes are expected to participate in a snow shoe marathon starting and finishing in Two Harbors in what will be the first of what organizers say will be an annual event. Participants will run 26.2 miles in their snowshoes leaving Superior Shores Lodge at 8 a.m. and traveling up the new Two Harbors corridor snowmobile trail that links with the North Shore Trail. The faster of the runners are expected to take about four hours to complete the run.

Volunteer driver logs many miles and smiles

Alphild Nylund maintains a philosophy, “I’ve always like to do things for other people.”

Monday, Jan. 25, marks the last day Alphild drove for the Two Harbors meals on wheels program for Manna Mobile. Alphild has faithfully driven hot meals on Mondays to “her people” for 15 years, driving a route that went uptown and to Segog. Taking on a personal tone to her deliveries, Alphild took Christmas cards to “my people” and will surely miss those contacts. She was honored at a retirement party at Bayview Terrace sponsored by the Lake County Council for Community Services.
