NOTABLE DELIVERIES

On Monday, a 10-pound tub of butter was received here by parcel post at the cost of 46 cents. Among the articles received here have been a pump handle, a suit case and a hand saw. The merchants are receiving quiet a number of packages by parcel post that formerly came by express.

1938

CHIEF URGES PARENT DUTY

Chief of Police John Hanson finds his staff unable to patrol the streets sufficient to prevent all coasting on or across city by children on sleds or skis. Parents are urged to warn their children of the dangers of coasting and hitchhiking sleds and skis to moving vehicles. Several fatalities have already been reported in Duluth and range cities this winter and children should be taught the grave danger in such practices. Children should be sent with their sleds to the slide on the hillside below the high school where they can enjoy the sport in comparative safety.

WINTER SLAPS AREA WITH FRIGID BLAST

Wintry blasts sweeping down from polar regions with a brisk northwest wind sent the mercury plummeting to an official low of 21 below zero at the lighthouse in Two Harbors Monday morning and to unofficial readings of down to 40 below in the wilderness area to the north. Part of the punishment meted out by the weatherman was in the fact that in the days just before mild weather had hiked the mercury to above freezing level with 38 degrees above at noon on Jan. 9. Two Harbors did not get above 12 below on Monday giving service stations ample business with calls from auto owners unable to start their vehicles.

SHANNON AND

BLIZZARD ARRIVE

AT SAME TIME

It was a long labor of love but the first baby of the year to be born at Lake View Memorial Hospital in Two Harbors came in with the blizzard of Jan. 12. Shannon June Midbrod was born on that snowy Tuesday after her mother, Robin, of Silver Bay weathered 18 hours of hard labor. The long labor allowed Shannon’s father, Scott, time to get to the hospital after being turned back at Split Rock on Monday night by blinding, drifting snow. Shannon, the couple’s first child was born at 1:58 p.m
