Mariner girls continue winning streak/p>

The Mariner girls swept a two game home series with Lake of the Woods to give them five wins in their last six games. Friday night in Two Harbors, Cassie Swanson shut out the Lady Bears 6-0 with 10 saves. Saturday afternoon in Silver Bay, Sara Carman shut them out with 6 saves in a 7-0 victory.

In game one, seventh-grader Cora Carter scored twice as did Anna Carman. Brooke McMillen and Rebecca Dilley made the other two goals and Dilley added two assists. Carter's goal at 2:30 of the first period was the game winner as the Mariners put 55 shots on goal.

Two eighth graders got into the scoring action in game two. McMillen picked up her first varsity hat trick and Hannah Johnson scored her first two varsity goals. Katelyn DeRoiser scored the game winner nine minutes into the game and Kristina Thums contributed the remianing goal. Eighth grader Hattie Koehler had two assists as the Mariners put 77 shots on goal giving Emily Ney 119 saves in two games for the Lady Bears.

Junior Anna Carman became the eighth Mariner to surpass the 100 mark in career points earlier this season. She is currently seventh overall with 110 points. She is seventh in goals (62) and eighth in assists (48).

The girls are at Moose Lake tonight and Eveleth on Tuesday as they try to avenge two games they lost by one goal. Both basketball teams host Cook County this evening and are at Cook on Tuesday to play Northwoods.

North Shore Storm tally two wins

The North Shore Storm played two games last week without giving up a goal. At Ely, they prevailed 11-0 as they outshot the Timberwolves 58-18. At Coleraine, they defeated the Greenway Raiders 2-0 as the shots were 28-23 in favor of the Storm. Zach Duresky had both shutouts as he stopped all 41 shots he faced.

Luke Small had five goals and an assist to lead the offense at Ely. He scored the game winner 1:50 into the game. Tyler Schramm added a goal and 2 assists, Mike Nordean scored twice and Thomas Anderson had a goal and an assist. Jonah Koehler, Kory Buckman and Mills Johnson each added two assists. Austyn Wasko and Corey Johnson scored the other two goals. After Small and Schramm made it 3-0 at 12:50 of the first, the Wolves took a five minute boarding penalty. The Storm scored, capitalizing three times on the penalty before the period ended, which remove any doubt as to the outcome of the contest. Kael Richards stopped 47 Storm shots.

Small also picked up the game winner in Coleraine on an unassisted goal at 13:55 of the first. Koehler scored number two on a power play at 6:14 of the second. Mike LaDoux had 26 saves for the Raiders.

While the third period was scoreless, it was far from uneventful as 11 penalties were called for a total of 33 minutes.

Upcoming games for the Storm have them hosting International Falls tomorrow at Silver Bay, Virginia on Tuesday at Silver Bay and Ashland on Thursday at Two Harbors as they start getting into the meat of the 7A portion of the schedule.

The East Grand Forks boys and Mounds View girls are the only undefeated high school hockey teams after the first week in January.
