Two Harbors musher and dogs win Gichigami Express

Two Harbors musher Ross Fraboni edged Ryan Redington to win the inaugural Gichigami Express Sled Dog Race in Cook County. Fraboni raced with the dogs, training and support of Troy Groeneveld of Ten Squared Racing, a dog-sled supply company based in Two Harbors.

Fraboni led the pack by around four-minutes going into Tuesday’s third and final day, but Redington, of Wasilla, Alaska, was only able to take seconds off the deficit.

Fraboni earned $6,500 for the victory. He finished the race, which started near Grand Portage, went along the Gunflint Trail, worked its way from Windigo to Devil Tower, then back to Grand Portage, with a total trail time 12 hours, 7 minutes, 51 seconds, with Redington finishing in 12:10:48.

Keith Aili (12:27:37) of Ray, Will Kornmuller (12:37:27) of Willow, Alaska, and Ryan Anderson (12:42:29) of Ray rounded out the top five. The event had a total purse of $25,000.
