Jacques La Christian spent his voyageur days paddling beaver furs around North America in a canoe. Now, he uses his story to encourage kids to enjoy nature in these modern times.
“The kids really respond to it,” said Jaques’ fellow performer Larry “The Bear.”
Larry and Jacques (real names Larry South and Dave Popilek) dress up in period clothing for performances, meaning lots of leather and fur. Jacques tells stories of his voyageur adventures with a French-Canadian accent while Larry provides musical accompaniment and acting support. The performance is a lot of fun, Weber said, but there’s a deeper purpose, too.
“We’re seeing what we can do to impact their lives,” he said. He said that getting kids interested in history and wilderness activities helps them channel their energy in a positive direction.
Jacques and Larry will be performing in “The Storyteller” on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Evangelical Free Church, 973 Scenic Drive. The event starts at 6 p.m. and takes place around a campfire.
Though the program is geared toward younger boys, Weber said all are welcome.
“Bring your imagination, because we will be tweaking it,” he said.
