The Silver Bay girls’ hockey team had a very successful holiday tournament season as they won two games in the Red Division of the Schwan’s Cup before falling 4-1 to Holy Family/Waconia in the championship game at Ridder Arena. They defeated Sun Prairie 3-2 and Hutchinson 5-3 to advance to the title game. Anna Carman scored 6 goals in the three games and seventh graders Cora Carter and Everly Bauck and eighth grader Hattie Koehler made their first varsity goals.
In their first game, Bauck and Claire Johnson of Sun Prairie traded goals in the first period of play. The second period saw Carman sandwich a pair of goals around one from Taylor Behnke to make the score 3-2 after two periods. The third period was scoreless. Carman's game winner came on a power play with assists from Nicole Jaeger and Rebecca Dilley. Cassie Swanson had an outstanding game in the Mariner nets with 40 saves as the Mariners were outshot 42-16.
In game two, after the first period proved to be scoreless, Hutchinson took a 1-0 lead on a Baylee Holtz goal 3:23 into the game. Carman then scored the first two of her three goals in the game to give the Mariners a 2-1 lead after two periods. Hutchinson took a 3-2 lead 3:40 into the final period of play on goals from Addie Rolling and Jordan Guggisberg. After Carman completed her hat trick to tie it at three, Carter scored the game winner and Rebecca Dilley put in an insurance goal. Sara Carman picked up the win in the Mariner nets with 13 saves as Silver Bay outshot the Tigers 24-16.
In the championship game, Holy Family jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one-on goals from Ally Mars and Abby Hanscom and led 3-0 after two periods on another Hanscom goal. After a Carman power play goal made it 3-1, Hanscom completed a hat trick into an empty net. Swanson finished with 27 saves for the Mariners who were outshot 31-13.
The Mariners enter the New Year with a record of 4-11.They play Lake of the Woods at 8 p.m. this evening in Two Harbors and at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Silver Bay. Tuesday they host Proctor/Hermantown at Rukavina Arena.
The North Shore Storm opened their holiday tournament action with a 6-3 victory over Bagley/Fosston. This proved to be their highlight as they then fell 5-0 to tournament champion Legacy Christian and 5-4 to tournament runner-up Robbinsdale Cooper. Mills Johnson with 2 goals and 3 assists, Austyn Wasko with 2 goals and an assist and Brad Rowlee with a goal and 2 assists led the Storm offensively in the tournament. Zach Duresky made 104 saves as he played all three games.
Game one saw Wasko put the Storm up 2-0 after one period of play. After Thomas Anderson made it 3-0 56 seconds into the second period and Johnson scored the game winner 21 seconds later, the Flyers switched net-minders. A Brad Rowlee score made it 5-1 after two and Tyler Schramm scored the Storm's final goal. Duresky picked up the win with 35 saves as the Storm outshot the Flyers 47-38.
In their second game, Legacy scored two first-period goals via Zach Cole and Brock Thompson for a 2-0 lead despite being outshot 10-6. Legacy upped it to 4-0 after two, on goals from Gordy Vitek and Lucas Stauffeneker while outshooting the Storm 20-9.Vitek scored shorthanded for the Lions in the final period as the Storm outshot the Lions 12-5. Duresky finished with 27 saves and Tanner Balk stopped all 31 Storm shots he faced.
After Trey Rooney put Cooper up 1-0 just 42 seconds into the Storm’s third game, the Storm tied it up 26 seconds later on a power play goal from Luke Small. Cooper replied by scoring on both ends of a 5-on-3 advantage for a 3-1 lead with the scores coming from Newhon Norkeh and Alex Stager. Kory Buckman's goal for the Storm proved to be the only one of the second period to make it 3-2 heading into the final period of play. Hayden Gautsche made it 4-2 for Cooper six minutes into the third before Small's second goal of the game restored it to a one-goal game. Stager's second goal of the game, a power play goal, came at 11:30 and proved to be the game-winner. Johnson scored the Storm’s final goal just before the buzzer. Duresky finished with 42 saves as the Storm were outshot 47-37.
The Storm enter 2013 with a record of 6-4.They played at Ely yesterday and are at Coleraine tomorrow to play Greenway. Thursday they host Eveleth-Gilbert at Silver Bay.
