Last year, North Shore Community School students donated raised about $2,300 for the American Heart Association during December. This year, their teachers asked the students to best that donation. If they did, Director Susan Rose and Interim Director Alisha Franckowiak promised they would sleep on the roof of the school.
The students met their goal, raising $2,557 for the AHA, as well as donating 16 turkey dinners to a local food shelf and 400 books and $164 to the Salvation Army.
On Wednesday, Dec. 19, the kids gathered in front of the school to wish Rose and Franckowiak a safe and warm night on the roof. The students also got to vote on whether the teachers got to sleep in a tent or under the stars. The open-air option won by 25 votes. The teachers were equipped with heavy-duty sleeping bags and many layers of clothing for their chilly slumber party.
