DO CHRISTMAS SHOPPING HERE

Two Harbors merchants are offering unusual inducements to the Christmas shoppers this year. All of the leading businessmen are represented in this issue of the Journal News. Here are a few of the sales that will encourage you to be loyal to your home town:

E.A. Daniels: Men’s overcoats, $16.65; all felt shoes, $1.00; Chas. F. Falk, offering Victor talking machines and records; Shriners Bros & Moulton, outing flannel, 6 ½ cents per yard; J.T. Engstrom, a fine line of Christmas dishes; Axel Lyon, largest selection of cigars; James Drug, Perfumes; A.E. Haugan, good things for the big dinner; Gust Nelson, pure liquors for home and medicinal purposes.

NO SNOW IN DECEMBER?

A light snow fell on Tuesday but there will have to be a lot more before there will be sleighing.

RARE WOLF SHOT AT NINE MILE LAKE

An Alaskan black timber wolf, the first of its species to be taken in northern Minnesota, was shot by W. B. West of Duluth, who has been a guest at the Hotel Agate Bay for some time. He had been deer hunting with Franklin Amundsen. The wolf measured 80 inches from the tip of its nose to the tip of its tail.

LACKS THANKSGIVING SPIRIT

A local man was arrested recently for making threats to his wife to blow up his home with a charge of ntiro-glycerine. In a state of intoxication, the man rebelled against the plans his wife was making to have some of his children, of which there are thirteen, at the home for Thanksgiving dinner.

PEARL HARBOR ATTACK WILL BE OBSERVED

A two –day national observance of the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor will be sponsored by the Office of War Information. To be observed on Sunday, Dec. 6 , and Monday, Dec. 7 , wherever there are Americans around the world. The OAWI proposes that the nation, under the cry of “Remember Pearl Harbor – Work – Fight = Sacrifice! “ will honor and remember the men and women who have already given their lives in this struggle. The hour of the Pearl Harbor attack (2:30 P.M., EWT) Dec. 7, will be specially marked but no ceremony should delay war production. As Winston Churchill put it: “This is not the end; it isn’t even the beginning of the end; but at least it is the end of the beginning.”

MAY TINGE TO WEATHER DISAPPEARS

Unseasonable warm December weather was existing Wednesday along the North Shore with a heat wave reaching a climax on Sunday bringing about recollections of summer days with the temperature running into the 60’s. Grass was turning green, golfers dotted the golf course and men working on crews in the Superior National Forest were working in shirt sleeves. Now however the temperatures will dip to 16 degrees and we could see the first of the winters snows in the area.

LOCAL COUPLE GETS RELAYED POLE CALL

Mr. & Mrs. Blaine Running received a call via a ham radio operator in Wisconsin from their nephew, Harold Wick, who is spending a year’s duty in Antarctica with the U.S. Naval forces. Lasting about two minutes before static drowned out the voice, Harold explained that it was summer down there and the sun shines 24 hours a day. Once late February arrives though winter will set in and it will be dark 24 hours a day with temperatures reaching 78 below.

RAFFLE HELPS PAY FOR NEW DECORATIONS

Local businesses put together a raffle effort in order to raise money to pay for the Christmas decorations which have already been installed. The first place prize of a boat, motor and trailer was won by Charlie Oling with the second place prize, a depth finder, going to Jeno Goedel.

TWO HARBORS BROTHERS GET SERIOUS ABOUT SHOWING CARS

Car showing began for Steve and Cris Schreyer in the fall of 1984 when Steve and his wife, Paula, drove their ’68 Chevelle SS to Spirit Mountain to see a small car show. Asked at the gate if they were spectators or competitors, deciding to enter and then win second place in the hot-rod category, they were hooked. Soon both brothers were working on show cars; Steve’s ’68 Corvette Roadster and Cris’ ’81 White Mustang have consistently placed first or second in competition.
