Give the gift of "Company Town"
By: From Brett Mensing, Silver Bay, Lake County News Chronicle
I enjoyed reading the Chronicle’s recent article about my friend, Alexis Jacobson, and her volunteerism, especially in regard to a project we worked on together: the book “Company Town: An Oral History about Life in Silver Bay, Minnesota, 1950s-1980s.”
I just wanted to note that I think the book would make a great Christmas gift for anyone who lived in Silver Bay when Reserve Mining Company was in operation. I think it would also be a good gift for anyone who is interested in North Shore area history—I know I learned a lot as we recorded the interviews of longtime residents. I think the kind of book we created really makes history interesting and enjoyable to read.
Another great thing about the book is that all the proceeds from its sale go to Kelley High School. So, if someone buys it as a Christmas gift, it’s like giving twice—to the recipient and to the school. It’s only $10, and it’s available at KHS and also at the Silver Bay Public Library, at the Bay Area Historical Society, and at the Cedar Chest (in Beaver Bay). Also, if anyone is interested in ordering the book through the mail, more information is available by emailing SilverBayMN@hotmail.com.
