The Mariner girls’ hockey team hopes to repeat the success of last season when it went 18-10 and made it to the section 7A championship game before falling 3-0 to Chisago Lakes. To do so they will have to fill the big hole left by the graduation of Marina Carter and Taylor Guzzo and the 54 goals and 119 points they scored. Also lost was top defenseman Shay Viola.
Junior Anna Carman is the top returning scorer with 22 goals and 49 points. Other returning forwards include senior Katelyn DeRoiser, sophomores Tori Stevens, Kristiina Thums and Carrie Palmer.
Sophomore Allison Morris who missed most of last season due to injury and Samantha Anderson who was out all last season also return.
Newcomers include senior foreign exchange student Nea Rapo from Finland, seventh graders Everly Bauck, Cora Carter and April Velcheff and eighth graders Brooke McMillen, Hannah Johnson, Hattie Koehler, Macey Jones and Summer Torgerson.
Seniors Nicole Jaeger and Rebecca Dilley return experience to the blue line along with freshman Madison Roy. Senior Rachel Dilley will move from up front back to the point. Junior McKenzie Schreffler also returns along with newcomer Sarah Fjeran.
In the goal the Mariners return all three goaltenders in senior Cassie Swanson, junior Phoenix Lillis and freshman Sara Carman. Swanson and Lillis made huge improvements in playing their positions last season.
The team includes 14 players from Silver Bay, four from Cook County, four from Two Harbors , two from Babbitt and one from Ely.
A few changes have been made to the schedule. The season’s opening game scheduled for 11-13 at Two Harbors has been canceled as Ashland has folded its team. Instead there will be a scrimmage with Proctor/Hermantown.
The Nov. 30 game with the Webster/Grantsburg Blizzard has been rescheduled to be held at Two Harbors. A game with Pequot Lakes has been added for Dec. 21 at Silver Bay.
